Fast answer: On the Canon EOS 80D, “silent shooting” is the Silent LV shoot setting used in Live View. Turn on Live View, then set Silent LV shoot to Mode 1 (safe default) and take a quick test shot.

Do this (5 steps)

  1. Set mode dial to P / Av / Tv / M.
  2. Press Start/Stop to enable Live View.
  3. Press MENU → open the Shooting (red camera) tab.
  4. Select Silent LV shoot → choose Mode 1.
  5. Take a test shot in Live View. If you see LED banding/flicker, switch silent off or change shutter speed.

Direct answer

Enable Silent LV shoot (Mode 1) while shooting in Live View. On the EOS 80D this is the practical “silent shooting” setting.

Troubleshooting

Can’t find “Silent LV shoot”

  • Make sure you’re in a normal mode (P/Av/Tv/M) and turn on Live View first.
  • Check other Shooting tabs (it can be on a later shooting page).

It’s not actually quiet

  • Confirm you’re taking the test shot in Live View. Through the optical viewfinder it will not be the same.
  • Some noise can remain (aperture, lens AF/IS). “Silent” is usually reduced shutter actuation noise, not total silence.

Banding under indoor LEDs

  • Common with electronic/silent modes. Disable silent or adjust shutter speed until banding reduces.
