Canon R5 shutter count: how to check it (and what it means)
Shutter count is the number of mechanical shutter actuations a camera has recorded. It’s most useful when buying used gear, or when you’re trying to understand wear-and-tear relative to the camera’s expected service life.

How to check shutter count on Canon R5
Canon doesn’t always provide a simple in-camera “shutter count” screen for every model. Practically, you’ll usually check it using:
- A shutter-count utility that reads camera metadata, or
- EXIF data from a fresh image (tool-dependent; not all tools expose it reliably for all Canon bodies).
Mechanical vs electronic shutter: does it affect count?
It can. If you shoot a lot with electronic shutter / silent modes, mechanical actuations may be lower than your total frames captured. That’s why shutter count is an imperfect proxy for “how used” the camera is.
What shutter count actually tells you
- Great for used-buying negotiation (low count can justify higher price).
- Not a guarantee: drops, moisture, and heavy pro use matter as much as count.
Buying used R5: what else to check
- Card slot and battery door condition
- Ports (USB/HDMI) tightness
- Sensor condition / dust
- Hot shoe / contacts
